Day
1: OBAN to BARRA |
Waiting
in a drookit (very wet) Oban for the Barra ferry we were entertained
by the quite surreal sight of a man walking along the shore with
his Alsatian dog and pet ferret. |

I
was worried the dog would spook the flock of Black Guillimot loitering
on the edge of the promenade |

As
we left Oban the view along the Sound of Kerrara was very grey
but nevertheless charming. |

I was extremely disappointed that the
5 hour journey was literally a wash-out as far as wildlife or
landscape photography.
Eventually we came to Castlebay the main port on the Isle of
Barra.

The
sun was a least trying to come out revealing a lovely sight, the
Craigard Hotel where we would dine later in the evening. |
The
late evening light on Kisimul Castle made a dramatic sight befitting
a building steeped in history. |

1: OBAN to BARRA |

The Castle is thought to have been the
stronghold of the Clan McNeil since the 11th century. The castle
apparently has two artesian wells to provide water and hold
fish in a trap in a catchment basin. This is to aid survival
during sieges. To defend the castle from attack a crew were
on constant siege alert and were expected to launch a ship which
was always moored in the bay.
The start of this trip was a bit disappointing due to the vagries
of the Scottish weather. No real opportunities for photography
today but some good fare at the Craigard Hotel and a few pints
of the black stuff and I'm looking forward to Day 2
